What sections does an ESG or sustainability report need?
Short answer: An ESG report needs six sections: governance (who owns it), materiality (which topics matter and why), targets (with baselines and dates), data (the metrics, with units and boundaries), method (how the numbers were produced), and assurance (what was checked and by whom). A report with targets but no method is a brochure.
What does the materiality section have to show?
Which topics were assessed, how they were assessed, who was consulted, and the threshold that decided inclusion. Materiality is the argument of the report — it explains why these six topics and not the other twenty.
Reports that list material topics without the assessment read as a topic list chosen for convenience. The method sentence is what makes it auditable.
What has to be on the targets page?
Baseline year, baseline value, target year, target value, and the scope the target covers. A target without a baseline cannot be checked, and a target without a scope can be met by moving the boundary.
Where a target has been restated, say so on the same page. Silent restatement is the single fastest way to lose reader trust in an ESG report.
What does the data section need beyond the numbers?
Units, boundaries, the reporting period, and the consolidation approach for acquisitions and divestments. The same metric can differ by 30% depending on boundary choices; the report has to state which one it used.
Then the method section: emission factors, estimation approach, and the share of the figure that is estimated rather than measured. A number that is 60% estimated is still a valid number — as long as the report says so.

Questions this page gets asked.
How long should an ESG report be?
Twenty to forty pages for the report body, with the metric tables in an appendix. Length is driven by the number of material topics, not by a standard page count.
Does an ESG report need external assurance?
Not always, but it must say whether it has it and what scope the assurance covered. An unassured report is still usable; an unassured report that implies assurance is not.
Can a template be used for a regulated sustainability report?
The template gives you the page types and the section order. Whether your report satisfies a specific regulation is a question for your adviser — the pack does not decide regulatory compliance.
